Transformation

One day the town is brown
ground damp, air cold,
perennially overcast
then, a sea change
beige to green
hibernation to exhalation
with sprouts, flowers, leaves
stretched out to bursting
a cornucopic abrupt unfolding
potential, long arrested
in the freeze, released
with vigorous abandon
a new day full up
with life and growth
with the promise
of warmth to come.
