'Meru' A Review

Meru is a mountain climbing documentary about Conrad Anker, Jimmy Chin, and Renan Ozturk's first failed attempt to ascend Meru Peak's "Shark's Fin" and their subsequent second attempt. The film follows the three men on their first trying climb, the obstacles they encounter and overcome, and the circumstances which caused them to turn back. The story then loops back detailing the histories of the three men and two accidents which befell Jimmy and Renan before their second attempt on the Shark's Fin.

Beautifully shot, compellingly scored, we see nature at it's most stark and arresting. We also get a look at the obsession, determination, and satisfaction which drive individuals into such dangerous and testing situations. We get a glimpse only at the cost of this lifestyle. The will and endurance involved. For as much as the film talks about the difficulty of mountain climbing, Meru especially, there is much left unexplored, much left unsaid.

More of a thrilling exploration of the sport of mountain climbing rather than an investigation of the spirit that drives people to do it.

Rent It.
